How to deal with stress when circumstances in our lives or others’ lives are being reshaped?  Modifications in our lives can impact and affect us all differently.  Whether it takes place in our
individual life or in the world we live in we all react, think and feel differently.  Some transformations that occur within the world we live results in some of us feeling joy, excitement and optimism.  However, the same transformation may leave others feeling despair, stress and gloom.

You are in control of how you choose to react, think and feel
about changes that are not pleasing to you.  The new government has caused many to feel despair and stress amongst many other emotions.  In spite of what some are feeling, they have taken action in protesting in hopes of stopping injustices and creating
change for the better.  This is an inspiration to all who are not
satisfied with how the new administration is trying to alter
America into something it should not be.

Life Changing

Tips

If you are not happy with the current situation and are feeling
stressed here are a few suggestions that may help you in alleviating your tension:

Remain POSITIVE in knowing the situation is not hopeless.  In uncertain times or circumstances it is important to keep a positive outlook.  Ask yourself what part can I play in helping to make the situation better.  Keep your thoughts upbeat.  Because in you being hopeful will create promising feelings; such as, optimism.  As a result, your actions and attitude will be more concrete in you making the situation better instead of worse.

Get INVOLVED utilizing your passion and enthusiasm to join with others to jumpstart creating change that has a victorious outcome.  Unity, passion and action can make things happen.  Stay optimistic and decide how you can be helpful in making life better for you and someone else.  You may not get the results you want the first time.  However, let it be a motivator for you not to give up and keep moving forward for what you believe in.

Practice SELF-CARE to ensure you are nurturing your physical, emotional and mental needs.  It is important to slow down, relax and re-energize so that you get relief from your burden and have the strength to keep moving forward in your journey.  Find time to spend on taking care of you by doing enjoyable activities that are relaxing.  Or simply do nothing at all, whichever will be most beneficial to you in restoring your physical, emotional and mental well-being.

PRAYER.  If you are spiritual and pray, then you know how powerful prayer can be in transforming your life and the world we live in.  You can practice praying according to your spiritual beliefs.  You can pray about the fortunate changes you desire for your family, others and the world to become a reality.  Remaining faithful in prayer can be life changing.

“Fervent prayers produce phenomenal results.”
~Woodrow Kroll

When you apply the power of thinking positively the impact it has on your life can be amazing.  Your stress can be reduced, making a major part of your life a more enjoyable experience.  By thinking more hopeful you cannot help but to be optimistic, even when everyone around you may be miserable.  As a result, you are happier, less depressed, and more fulfilled. The benefits of having a promising perspective in life are great.  So, how do you train your brain to think like an optimist?

Use these 5 strategies to boost your positive thinking and help you create habits for increasing your happiness.

Keep Positive Information Top of Mind

Did you know that you may be able to increase your positivity just by memorizing lists of positive words?  Reason being is due to when you force your brain to use positive words frequently, you make these words (and its basic meaning) more accessible, more connected, and more easily activated in your brain.  So, when you go to retrieve a word or idea from your memory, positive ones can come to top of mind more easily.

Is it a challenge for you to determine which words are positive?  Psychologists have painstakingly measured thousands of words to determine how positive and negative they are. If you are struggling to think positively, try this strategy first.  It can help develop your brain in ways that may make the other positive thinking strategies easier to implement.

Reinforce Your Brain's Proficiency By Working with Positive Words

Once your brain has built strong neural networks for positive words, expand these networks by training your brain to use favorable information in new ways.  For instance, you could memorize encouraging words and set an alarm to remind yourself to recall these words in reverse order an hour later.

Another idea is that you could print out positive words on cards; cut the word on the card into two pieces; shuffle all of the pieces together; and then find each card's match.  For example, the word "laughter" would be cut into "laug" and "hter."  When you match the word pieces, your brain has to search through lots of positive information to find what it is looking for.  Remember, thinking positively while doing the memory recall task, makes it easier.

Boost Your Brain’s Ability to Pay Attention Positively

Are you one of those people who notices only when bad things happen?  For instance, when someone cuts you off in traffic or your food does not taste quite as good as you hoped it would?  If so, then you likely have trained your brain to focus on the negative.  As a result, your brain has gotten really good at it.  It can be really challenging to undo how you conditioned your brain to think this way.  So instead, it is better to train your brain to focus more on the bright side.

Just routinely practice focusing on positive information and direct your thoughts away from the negative.  Are you someone who needs help paying attention to the positive?

Create Habits to Experience Upbeat Moments

Did you know that you can condition yourself for positivity?  If you have ever taken an intro to psychology course, you have probably heard about the study of Pavlov's dog.  Here is a quick refresher:

Pavlov had a dog. Pavlov would ring a bell to tell his dog that it was almost feeding time. Like most dogs, Pavlov's dog would get really excited when he was about to get fed.  So, he would drool all over the place.  What happened?  Well, suddenly Pavlov's dog started getting excited just by the sound of that bell, even when food was not present.  Eating food and the sound of the bell became linked in the dog’s brain.  Something as meaningless as a bell was now making the dog excited.

This effect is called classical conditioning.  It's the idea that when two stimuli are repeatedly paired, the response that was first elicited by the second stimulus (food) is now elicited by the first stimulus alone (the bell). This happens all the time without us even realizing it. For example, the favorite food for many of us is something that we ate as a child with our families. What likely happened was the positive feelings of being with family and the particular food got paired in our brains.  As a result, we now get the warm-fuzzy feelings that we got from spending time with family just from eating the food alone, even if our family is not currently present when we eat it.

Although your environment is conditioning you to react in particular ways all the time, if you know what you are doing, you can use classical conditioning to boost your positivity. You do exactly what Pavlov did. You just repeatedly link boring things (like a bell ringing) with positive thoughts and feelings over and over again.  Eventually, these boring things will generate positivity automatically. That is classical conditioning at work.  This can help you think positive.  Because when you are going about your life, maybe even feeling bummed about stressors or challenges, you will have these little positive moments that keep you energized and in a good mood.

Both Positive and Negative Thinking Has Purpose

Of course, thinking positive has its benefits.  But thinking positive is not always the best response. Negative thoughts sometimes have benefits, too.

When we are sad or grieving, thinking negative thoughts, and showing the emotions that these thoughts create helps us communicate to others that we need their support and kindness. When we are treated unfairly and get angry, our thoughts can help motivate us to take action, make changes in our lives, and change the world. Casually pushing these negative emotions aside without seriously considering their origins can have negative consequences. So, when you focus on the negative, ask yourself, is this negative emotion resulting in action that improves your life?  If so, then keep it.  If not, then work on changing it.
