What does living a meaningful and purposeful life mean to you? For me, it is living a life in which I am satisfied, fulfilled, and happy. Of course, we cannot be happy all the time, because unpleasant things happen in life. However, living a rewarding life can help us to be more resilient, allowing us to better adapt and deal with mishaps in life.
Now, let me provide a little more detail for what a meaningful life means to me. It is having the time to spend doing the things I want with whom I want. This encompasses a lot of things. For instance, having spare time to do activities I enjoy with the people who are most important to me. One example, is spending time doing activities with my family and friends. One aspect of living a meaningful life is living by your values. I value relationships; therefore, I make sure to spend quality time with my family and friends.
At times, you may feel your life is lacking the things that are rewarding to you and truly make you happy. It is okay to feel dissatisfied with your life. So, when you do feel this way, what are you doing to make your life more satisfying?
The definition of living a meaningful life is different for everyone. We are all unique and have our own values, perceptions, and beliefs of the world and what is most important to us. Only you know the type of life you want to live which would be more meaningful. Have the courage to create a life that would potentially lie outside the norm for others, but suits you perfectly.
Here are some ways you can begin to create a more rewarding and fulfilling life:
Be of service to someone. The most satisfying life is one that serves others in some way. You could do community service, donate blood, or teach someone a new skill. Or volunteer to coach a youth athletic team. Serving others as you go through life is another way for you to experience more fulfillment.
Be adventurous. Some people spend their time living in their own world. Learn to expand your life experiences. For instance, learn how to play a sport or do an activity you have been putting off. Do a scenic road trip; take a vacation to one of the wonders of the world; do something daring you have always wanted to do but was afraid of doing. Learn to mix things up and do something different for a change, even if it makes you uncomfortable. You only live once and making the most of it will make your life more satisfying and rewarding.
Take a break from watching TV for a week. Watching TV, as well as, our phones can be addictive. Both can be very distracting and steal valuable hours from your life that could be spent doing countless other things. Such as, going back to school; learning to speak a foreign language; spending time with people important to you; or writing in your journal. When you think about it, how will spending countless hours watching TV or on your phone enrich your life?
Live a life that is pleasing to you. Many people feel obligated to live by the rules of society. Normally, where you go to college, get married, have children, and work towards having a successful career. If you choose or chose this path, make sure you create meaning and purpose in your life. If you do not take control of your life someone else will. Take charge of your own life!
Break away from your comfort zone. As you venture through life challenge yourself to occasionally do something that is exhilarating, uncomfortable, and makes you a better person. Living life in the comfort zone and hardly moving beyond that can cause mediocrity. Sometimes you have to make decisions and do things that make you uncomfortable in order to live a more meaningful and purposeful life.
Follow your intuition. Our intuition is unconscious information in our body or brain that helps guide us through life; be in touch with our environment; understand what is important; and use our judgment in making decisions. Although, our intuition is not always right, it is a good starting point for you to determine how to create a more meaningful life.
Be aware of your values. Are you deeply aware of your values? What matters the most to you? How would you feel if you were not living your life built around your values? Do you believe it is possible to have a meaningful life that is not built around your values? It is unlikely. You may already be living your life based on some of your values and are not just aware of it.
If you want to live a happier, healthier, and more satisfying life, then become aware which values are most important to you professionally and personally. Once you have figured it out, then make sure you make a plan for how you will practice these values in your home and work life.
Leverage your strengths and follow your passions. In living your life, practicing your values, leveraging your strengths, and following your passions can lead to you creating a more meaningful life.
