Are you setting personal goals for yourself?  When we achieve goals we have set for ourselves it can be quite gratifying.  Have you ever achieved goals which you felt like something is missing?  Why am I not happy?  I should be happy - right? 

Maybe you have set a goal and failed to accomplish it.  Now you are feeling stressed, discouraged, and have stopped setting goals for the future.  You cannot quite pin point why you are feeling the way you do when you achieve goals and when you do not.  You begin to wonder, what am I doing wrong?

Before setting and committing to achieving personal or professional goals, consider certain aspects.  Search within your being asking yourself the following questions and truly reflect on your answers.  Remaining truthful to yourself while answering these questions can help you to determine; what you really want and begin to set the stage for reaching the success you desire.

Is the goal yours or someone else’s?

Are you pursuing this goal, because it is what you want for your life or someone else wants for your life?  A major reason why we fail to reach goals is because we are trying to please someone else by doing what they want us to do.  Most of us like to get input from people that are important to us in our life regarding our aspirations.  However, it is important to your happiness and fulfillment in life that you decide on accomplishing goals that you want for yourself.


What is your motive for achieving this goal?


Why is it so important to you that you achieve this goal?  Are you clear on exactly how you want to benefit from reaching this goal?  How do you want to feel precisely once you have achieved this goal?  Hold onto this feeling and the benefits to help you stay committed in accomplishing your goal when experiencing setbacks.


How excited are you when thinking about achieving this goal?

It is important that you set goals that are challenging for you.  You planning to reach goals that are too easy or too hard, work against your motivation.  It is important that you set challenging goals for yourself, which you are capable of completing.  When you imagine the goal and visualize yourself as achieving it, you should feel a rush of excitement.  If so, then you know you have set a challenging, but doable goal for yourself.

If you are not feeling that rush of excitement, then maybe your goal is too easy or too difficult.  More likely you will feel discouraged, stressed, and frustrated making very little progress, if your goal is too difficult eventually giving up.  If your goal is too easy for you, then you may feel no sense of urgency in pursing the goal, thinking you can start working on it later. 


What is the likelihood you imagine that you will achieve this goal?


If the goal is one that you sincerely want for yourself and want to achieve, then you should be clear on its benefits and should be able to easily visualize it as a reality for you.  If you are not able to envision yourself achieving the goal and plainly enjoying the advantages, then maybe it is not the right goal.  You may want to rethink whether or not this is really your goal, by changing it, setting a short-term goal, or go back to your first step for deciding on goals you honestly want for yourself.
